Greetings with Introductions

Let's get started with different ways to greet and introduce oneself. Note the differences between female and male language users.

• Hallo, ich heiße Brigitte. Hi, my name is Brigitte.
• Servus, ich heiße Hannes. Hi there, my name is Hannes.
• Guten Morgen, ich bin die Frau Semmel. Good morning, I am Mrs Semmel
• Guten Abend, ich bin das Frälein Maler Good evening, I am Ms Maler.
• Schön guten Tag, ich bin der Herr Schmidt. Good day, I am Mr Schmidt.
• Hallöchen, ich nenne mich Siriustantiemen, aber ihr könnt mich gerne Siri nennen. Greetings, I call myself Sirisustantiemen, but you can call me Siri.

Shopping | Einkaufen

Let's look at some phrases one might use while shopping.

• Schön guten Tag, arbeiten sie hier? Good day, do you work here?
• Ich suche eine Jacke für den Urlaub in Kanada. I am looking for a jacket to take on my holiday to Canada.
• Entschuldigen sie bitte, haben sie Gesichtsmasken? Excuse me, do you have face masks?
• Wo bitte finde ich die Seife? Where can I find the soap?
• Wieviel kosted diese Thermosflasche? How much does this thermo bottle cost?
• Hallo, ich möchte bitte die Hose umtauschen. Hi, I would like to return these pants.

Akkusativ Prepositions & Time

Im - Akkusativ

We use im when a month or season follows.

• Es wird kälter im Herbst. It gets cold in autumn.
• Ich wurde im Jahr des Tigers gebohren. I was born in the year of the Tiger.

Am - Akkusativ

We use am when a day or time of day follows.

• Mein Verein trift sich am frühen Abend, jeden Dienstag. My club meets up in the early evening, every Tuesday.
• Man traf sich gewöhnlich am Abend. Usually one met in the evening.

Um - Akkusativ

We use um followed by a time to express a time that is aimed at, translated as around that time.

• Wir treffen uns morgen um fünfzehn Uhr. We'll meet tomorrow around 3pm.
• Kann ich dich um 10 Uhr besuchen? Can I visit you around 10 o'clock?

My First Numbers | Meine ersten Nummern

How old are you? | Wie alt bist du?

Let's use a few numbers regarding age.

• Ich bin vierundzwanizig Jahre alt. I am 24 years old.
• Mein Bruder ist acht Jahre alt. My brother is 8 years old.
• Morgen wird meine Mutter dreiundneunzig Jahre alt. Tomorrow, my mum will be 93 years old.

Phone Numbers | Telefonnummern

Let's exchange some numbers.

• Meine Telefonnummer ist null eins drei, zwei neun fünf, acht sieben sieben. My phone number is 013 295 877.
• Die Notfallnummer ist eins eins null. The emergency number is 110.
• Um die Feuerwehr anzurufen, wäle eins eins zwei. To call the fire department, dial 112.
• Falls mir etwas passiert, rufe bitte meine Frau unter null zwei acht, drei drei fü, null fünfzehn. If something happens to me, please call my wife at 028 335 0 fifteen.

Sizes | Größen

Let's go shopping and share the sizes we are looking for.

• Meine Taillengröße ist zweiunddreißig. My waste size is 32.
• Ich suche Schuhe in der Größe zweiundvierzig, das wäre eine acht in US und eine sieben in britischer Größe. I'm looking for shoes in size 42, that would be an 8 in US and a 7 in UK sizes.
• Hätten sie einen Rock in Größe neunzig? Would you have a skirt in size 90?
• Meine Frau ist sehr schlank, haben sie Kleider in der Größe sechs? My wife is very slim, do you have dresses in a size 6?
• Verkaufen sie Unterhosen im zwanziger Pack? Do you sell underpants in packs of 20?

My Family | Meine Familie

In this section we will start talking about our families.

Nuclear Family | die Kernfamilie

Most commonly we talk about our family in the sense of the nuclear family, for which the German word literally translates to core family.

• Meine Frau ist füundvierzig Jahre alt. My wife is 45 years old.
• Mein Mann und ich haben uns nach langjährigem Zusammenleben letztes Jahr uns dazu entschieden zu heiraten. My husband and I decided last year to get get married, after living together for years.
• Wir haben zwei Kinder zusammen, und drei aus vorherigen Ehen. We had two children gother, and three from previous marriages.
• Zusammen sind das fünf Kinder. Drei Mädchen und zwei Jungs. Together that makes 5 kids. Three girls and 2 boys.

Extended Family | die Großfamilie

The extended family includes family members outside of the nuclear family.

• Meine Schwiegermutter ist super nett. My mother in law is very kind.
• Es hat eine Weile gedauert bis mich der Schwiegervater akzeptiert hatte. It took a while for my father in law to accept me.
• Meine Kinder kennen nur ihre Großeletern väterlicher seits. My children only know the grandparents from their dad's side.
• Mein Mann ist ein Einzelkind, aber ich habe drei Geschwister. My husband is an only child, but I have 3 siblings.
• Ich habe einen Bruder, und zwei Schwestern. I have one brother and two sisters.
• Meine Oma und mein Opa wohnen in Mannheim. My nan and my pop live in Mannheim.

Family Tree | der Familienbaum

A family tree helps us visualise the breadth of a family.

• Dieser Familienbaum geht nur zwei Generationen zurück. This familie tree only goes back two generations.
• Der Familienbaum meiner Frau war einfach zu erstellen. It was easy to gather my wife's family tree.
• Für meinen Familinebaum brauche ich einen Genealogen. For my family tree, I need a genealogist.
• Unser Familienbaum hat viele Zweige. Our family tree has many branches.

Interview Start

The following sentences might be experienced in a job interview like situation.

Who are you? | Wer sind sie?

We'll start with name related questions and possible answers.

• Wer sind Sie? Who are you?
• Ich habe mich für die Stelle als Pflegehilfe beworben. I applied for the position as a care assistant.
• Was ist ihr Name? What is your name?
• Mein Name is Irish Roehrig. My name is Irish Roehrig.
• Mit welchem Namen möchten sie angesprochen werden? With what name would you like to be addressed?
• Irish ist in ordnung. Irish is OK.
• Bitte füllen Sie das Formular aus. Please complete this form.
• Entschuldgien Sie bitte, könnten Sie das noch einmal sagen? Sorry, could you please say that again?
• Sie können mich gerne dutzen. You can use the friendly and informal manner of addressing people when talking with me.

That last one, I just had to add it. Note: Formal German uses the formal Sie when addressing someone older, or senior in position, or non-familiar. While things are changing, it is best to still apply this rule.

Once people are familiar with each other, they will offer you to address them using the friendly, familiar form, which has its own name (of course) - Dutzen. Hence, you might hear someone say to you the following.

Du kannst mich ruhig dutzen.

To a German, this means, you're awesome, I enjoy your company, please say you and not Mx/Mr/Mrs/Ms to me!

Tell Me About Yourself | Erzähle Mir Etwas Von Dir

Once we have introduced why we are there, and what our name is, it is time to provide some details about ourself.

• Woher kommen Sie? Where are you from?
• Ich bin Filipina. I'm a Filipina
• Ich komme aus Thailand. Ich habe dort die letzen neun Jahre gelebt. I come from Thailand. I lived there for the past nine years.
• Wo sind Sie geboren? Where were you born?
• Auf den Philippinen. In the Philippines.

A quick note here. In the case of Philippines, we say auf, which translates to on, think of it as on the islands.

If one was born in a different place, for example Australia, then one would use in, as in English.

Ich bin in Australien geboren.

Current Address | Momentane Adresse

Finally, we will provide information on where we currently reside.

• Wo wohnen Sie? Where do you live?
• Ich wohne in einem Haus am Stadtrand. I live in a house on the outskirt of town.
• Was ist Ihre Adresse? What is your address?
• Und was ist die Hausnummber? And what is the house number?
• Kennen Sie die Postleitzahl? Do you know the postal code?
• Was ist Ihre Telefonnummer? What is your phone number?
• Und haben Sie ein Handy? Haben Sie die Nummber im Kopf? And, do you have a mobile? Do you know the number of the top of your head?
• Was ist Ihre Handynummber? What is your mobile number?

My Family Relations | Meine Familienbeziehungen

In this section we will start talking about different relationships inside of a family and how to express them.

That is ... | Das ist ...

• Das ist mein Ehemann That is my husband.
• Das sine mein Großeletern. Those are my grandparents.
• Das sind meine Kinder. These are my children.
• Das ist meine Tochter. That is my daughter.
• Das ist mein Sohn. That is my son.
• Dies sind meine drei Söhne. These are my three sons.
• Das sind meine Tante und mein Onkel. These are my aunt and uncle.
• Das ist meine Schwiegermutter, und das ist mein Schwiegervater. This is my mother in law, and my this is my father in law.
• Und das bin ich. And that's me.
